How to Use Sodium Metabisulfite to Sterilize
What You Need
- Sodium metabisulfite powder or tablets
- Clean water
- Container for mixing solution
- Items to be sterilized (e.g., fermenters, bottles, utensils)
- Protective gloves and eyewear (recommended)
Steps for Sterilization
-
Prepare the Solution
Standard dosage: Dissolve 1 campden tablet or roughly 3 grams of sodium metabisulfite powder in 1 liter of water. For larger quantities, increase proportionally. -
Mix Thoroughly
Stir the mixture until the powder/tablets are fully dissolved. -
Sterilize the Equipment
Pour or spray the solution over all surfaces of the items to be sterilized. Ensure full contact with all areas. -
Contact Time
Let items stay in contact with the solution for at least 10-15 minutes for effective sterilization. -
Rinse (Optional for Brewing, but Often Recommended)
Rinse equipment with clean, cold water to avoid any flavor or scent residue, unless specifically advised not to for your process. -
Dry/Use Immediately
Equipment can be air dried or used straight away, as preferred.
Safety Precautions
- Use in a well-ventilated area as fumes can be irritating.
- Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the solution.
- Store sodium metabisulfite out of reach of children and pets.
Notes
