How to Make Sodium Metabisulfite Solution
Materials Needed
- Sodium metabisulfite powder (Na2S2O5)
- Distilled water
- Beaker or glass container
- Stirring rod or spoon
- Digital scale
- Measuring cylinder
- Protective gloves and goggles
Instructions
-
Determine Concentration:
Decide on your desired concentration. Commonly used strengths are 1% or 2% (w/v). -
Weigh Sodium Metabisulfite:
For a 1% solution, weigh 10 grams of sodium metabisulfite for every 1 liter of water.
For a 2% solution, weigh 20 grams for every 1 liter of water. -
Prepare Water:
Measure the required volume of distilled water in the beaker. -
Dissolve the Powder:
Add the sodium metabisulfite to the water slowly while stirring constantly until completely dissolved. -
Label and Store:
Transfer the solution to a labeled container with the concentration and date. Store in a cool, dark place.
Safety Precautions
- Always wear gloves and eye protection while handling chemicals.
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Avoid inhaling the dust or vapors.
- Rinse skin immediately if contact occurs.
Notes
- Sodium metabisulfite solution is best prepared fresh, as it may degrade over time.
- Dispose of any unused solution following local regulations.
