Why Pool Owners Lean on Sodium Bicarbonate
Working around pools most of my life, I’ve seen plenty of folks dump everything from table salt to store-brand baking soda into their water, hoping for clear, comfortable swimming. Sodium bicarbonate—better known as baking soda—handles a specific job: raising total alkalinity. Alkalinity buffers the water, preventing wild pH swings that fog up eyes and tear at pool linings.
A steady pH means chlorine gets a fair shot at killing bacteria, and nobody’s hair turns green. If alkalinity drops, the whole setup turns unpredictable. Most standard test kits put a healthy range between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm). If your reading falls short, the water grows aggressive. If it creeps too high, your pool starts scaling.
Understanding the Dose: Not Just a Guess
The question at heart: “How much do I need?” Too many folks toss in handfuls “hoping for the best,” but numbers matter. One pound of sodium bicarbonate typically boosts alkalinity by about 7 ppm in 10,000 gallons of water. If you find your test kit showing 60 ppm, aiming for the low end of target at 80 ppm, you’ll want roughly three pounds for a standard 20,000-gallon backyard pool.
Most errors happen in overdoing things. Adding too much, too quickly, leads to cloudy water. Start low, sprinkle evenly around the pool with the pump running, and let the water circulate for at least six hours. Retest before reaching for more. It pays to go slow. Quick-fixes end up costing money in pool clarifiers and extra filters, not to mention wasted time.
Sodium Bicarbonate Isn’t a Cheap Substitute
Grocery store baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate. Pool supply brands sometimes charge more than double for essentially the same thing, packed in a bigger bag. Money-conscious owners save by buying from the baking aisle, but keep an eye on freshness and packaging. Damp storage ruins effectiveness.
On the flip side, nobody should confuse it with sodium carbonate (soda ash). Both raise pH, but soda ash has a much stronger effect and can spike your pH quickly. Overcorrecting leads to new headaches, requiring even more chemicals to repair the balance.
Getting It Right Without Guesswork
Plenty of free online tools let you plug in your pool’s volume and current numbers. Most reputable pool brands offer calculator charts. Make use of these resources—playing fast and loose with chemicals only invites problems.
Make a habit of testing the water weekly. Routine checks keep surprises at bay and help spot trends before they spiral out of control. New pool owners especially benefit from a reliable kit and a simple logbook.
Trouble can come from other sources too—lots of rainwater, heavy swimming loads, even dusty wind. Each can push alkalinity lower, so trust the numbers, not just the look of the water.
