How to Use Sodium Metabisulfite for Sanitizing
Sodium metabisulfite is commonly used for sanitizing brewing and winemaking equipment. Follow these steps to safely and effectively use it as a sanitizer:
1. Gather Supplies
- Sodium metabisulfite powder
- Clean water (preferably warm)
- Measuring spoons or a digital scale
- A large container or bucket
- Protective gloves (optional, but recommended)
2. Prepare the Sanitizing Solution
The standard solution is 1 tablespoon (about 15 grams) of sodium metabisulfite per gallon (about 3.8 liters) of water.
- Fill your container with the desired amount of warm water.
- Add the sodium metabisulfite to the water.
- Stir well until the powder is fully dissolved.
3. Sanitizing Equipment
- Submerge all equipment and surfaces to be sanitized in the solution.
- Let them soak for at least 1–2 minutes.
- Swish or move items around to ensure all surfaces are in contact with the sanitizer.
4. Air Dry or Rinse
- Air drying is recommended. Allow items to drip dry after removing them from the solution.
- If you prefer, a quick rinse with clean, boiled water can be done, but many brewers and winemakers use a no-rinse method.
5. Safety Tips
- Never ingest sodium metabisulfite or the sanitizing solution.
- Always use in a well-ventilated area; vapors can be irritating.
- Store the powder and solution out of reach of children and pets.
Note: Sodium metabisulfite can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Use gloves if you have sensitive skin.
