Sodium Metabisulfite Dosage for Mead

The typical amount of sodium metabisulfite to add per gallon of mead is:

  • 1/4 teaspoon (about 1.5 grams) per 5 gallons (19 liters)
  • For 1 gallon (3.8 liters), this equals approximately 1/20 teaspoon (about 0.3 grams)

This dosage provides roughly 50 ppm (parts per million) of free SO2, which is usually sufficient for preservation and protection against oxidation and spoilage.

Note: Always dissolve sodium metabisulfite in a small amount of water before adding it to mead, and measure carefully. Overuse can impart unpleasant flavors.
